We are situated in County Offaly, midway between Roscrea
Co. Tipperary and Birr Co. Offaly.
Our school is a co-educational Catholic primary school which strives to provide a well-ordered, caring, happy and secure atmosphere where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of pupils are identified and addressed
While our school is a school with a catholic ethos, it also has due recognition for all other religions. We strive to promote, both individually and collectively, the professional and personal development of teachers through staff development programmes. We encourage the involvement of parents through home/school contacts, and through the Parents Council.
We endeavour to enhance the self-esteem of everyone in the school community, to imbed in the pupils, respect for people and property and to encourage in pupils the idea of being responsible young people.

Cross Country
Well done to our school who completed in the Offaly Primary School Cross Country Championship, for most pupils it was their first time ever running cross country, a very enjoyable day. Well done to our 3rd class boys who came 2nd in the team event and Daniel who won an individual medal in his first time ever .running cross country

Boys Football
Our boys have followed the girls into the Cumann na mBunscol schools football final. Wins against Kilcormac, Clonlisk, Clareen and Lusmagh have brought us into the final against High St. in two weeks time

European Day of Sport
On September 29th the school took park in European Day of sport , as part of the day our younger classes went out on a walk around the hurling pitch.

Girls Football
On September 26th our girls played their blitz in Coolderry. After an opening loss to Kinnitty/Roscomroe, our girls were under pressure. Wins over Clonlisk and Shinrone set up a showdown with Dromakeenan with the winner advancing to the county final. Our girls played superbly and took the victory they now advance to play Kinnitty/Roscomroe in the final towards the end of October. We had every girl togged out from 3rd -6th and each girl played at least one match and for many it was their first time playing football.

Mrs. Teehan`s Retirement

PRINCIPAL of Coolderry Central School, Mrs Una Teehan has retired after 42 years in the parish.
Tuesday June 27th was to be the final day of the school term before the summer break. It was a very memorable day for the whole school community. For Mrs Teehan, the day was a mixture of sadness at leaving after a lifetime of working in the parish, coupled with gratitude for having had the good health to be Principal for so many years.
On the day, all of the pupils from Junior Infants to sixth class overwhelmed Mrs Teehan as they formed a surprise Guard of Honour during the school day and as she approached they clapped and cheered. It was a beautiful gesture by all of the pupils and a very emotional moment for Mrs Teehan, as it really brought into focus the end of an era in her career as a teacher and Principal in the parish.
A beautiful poem was read by Jenny Dooley, a sixth class pupil and presented to Mrs Teehan in a framed portrait. An amazing painting involving all of the pupils in the school inputting their fingerprints was presented to Mrs Teehan on behalf of all the pupils in the school. A bouquet of flowers was also presented on behalf of all the pupils – Jodi Mai Breen the youngest pupil in the school and Avah Tooher, the oldest pupil in the school, did the honours.
Group photographs of Mrs Teehan, the pupils and staff were taken. Mrs Teehan thanked the pupils and the staff for the beautiful presentations, the kind words and their great support and friendship.
Mrs Teehan was very sad to be leaving the school and community as it had been an integral part of her life for 42 years, with her focus always being on helping the children to achieve their full potential. Mrs Teehan always gave of her best for the benefit of the school and the pupils. The kindness and thoughtfulness of all of the pupils was very moving and so much appreciated by Mrs Teehan

Proud Day
For the second year in a row our school had a pupil participate in Croke Park on All Ireland Semi-Final day. It was a brilliant experience for Avah and we are all so proud of her achievements.

Coolderry Central School Celebrates 40 years
Coolderry Central School is celebrating 40 years in existence this year, having been established in 1983 .
The school is an amalgamation of two former schools in the Parish, namely Ballyegan National school and Coolderry National School.
Down through the years, Coolderry Central School has undergone many major improvements. At the time of the establishment of the school, the staff consisted of Mr. George Cunningham, Mrs. Anne kennedy, Mrs. Lucy Mc. Carthy, Mr. Tom Lupton and Miss Una Cleary. The only member of the original staff who has remained there to this day is Mrs. Una Teehan (nee Cleary), who took on the role of Principal almost twenty years ago and who has with the help of the Boards of Management initiated major developments at the school such as the designated infant soft play area, new entrance doors, improved security , a sensory room, provision of interactive white boards throughout the school, new floor coverings , upgrading of the staff room with the installation of a new kitchen unit and facilities, provision of a new office for the Principal ,a computer room, an office for the secretary, the upgrading and refurbishment of facilities within the school and landscaping of the school grounds to name just a few - all of which ensure that the school today looks very impressive indeed.
On May 26th, a formal celebration of 40 years of the school was held at the school. The weather was absolutely magnificent. There was glorious sunshine and the formal event which was held outdoors on the school grounds began with Mrs. Una Teehan extending a very warm welcome to the huge
crowd in attendance.
This was followed by an outdoor concert provided by the school choir under the direction of Mrs. Geraldine Bryan. Throughout the evening, the pupils performed a vast array of songs, instrumental music and dance to the enjoyment of all present. The pupils were absolutely fantastic, finishing with the Offaly Rover with everyone joining in.
The music was interspersed with presentations and words of welcome from Mrs. Marie Kennedy ,Chairperson of the Board of Management Mr. Paddy Bates , former Principal and Mrs. Una Teehan,the current Principal.

recognition of their dedication, contribution and service over many years,to current staff members who continue this great tradition and also to Mrs. Geraldine Bryan, who has been a constant support to the school at Confirmations ,Holy Communions ,Graduations and many other
celebrations ,giving of her time and expertise freely over many years .
Mrs. Una Teehan acknowledged the huge contribution of all who have worked in the school in any capacity over the past 40 years and thanked them for their dedication .
A presentation of a beautiful bouquet of flowers was also made to Mrs. Una Teehan by Mrs. Marie Kennedy, Chairperson of Board of Management on behalf of all present at the 40th celebration. She wished Mrs. Teehan a very happy Retirement as Una , who after 42 years in the parish beginning
her teaching career ,initially as a newly qualified teacher in 1981, in one of the prefabricated buildings which pre-dated the current school has decided to retire.
Una is very sad to be leaving as the school community has been an integral part of her life for the past 42 years .As School Principal, Una has always encouraged pupils to achieve their potential. Down through the years, the pupils
participated in numerous initiatives and won many local and national awards for their projects and sporting achievements, which have given students great life skills.
Una has always encouraged pupils to participate in various sporting activities and is very proud of what the pupils have achieved individually,for the school and for the county. Una congratulated and praised our current camogie
champions who had just won the Cumann na mBunscol B final the previous day in Birr gaining victory over Kinnity in a very exciting closely fought final, which was a fantastic achievement for all of the panel and for the school.
Una also acknowledged the support of the Boards of Management and the Parent Associations over the years and had a special word of thanks to the current Board of Management and the current Parent Association who give so freely of their personal time for the benefit of the school community.
Una also acknowledged the wider community for their great friendship and generous support .She was very appreciative of the support of the local GAA, the Camogie club and The Community Threshing group under the guidance of Ray Dempsey, who have provided huge support to the school over many years. Una expressed a special word of thanks to both Ray Dempsey and Coleman Coady who ensured that the marquee which the Threshing Committee very kindly supplied for the refreshments, was delivered and set up for the occasion with the help of some parents and members of the Board of Management.
After the cutting of the cake in honour of the occasion by Former Principal Mr. Paddy Bates and Mrs. Una Teehan, all in attendance were invited to relax and chat over a cup of tea and other refreshments for both children and adults, which were available in the marquee at the back of the school. Food items were very kindly donated by parents. The teas were provided by the Parents
Association.
There was a very large and extensive photographic exhibition relating to life not only in the school, but in the parish in general over the past 40 years throughout the school along with other memorabilia of times gone by on display in the various classrooms for all to view at their leisure.
It was a very enjoyable and relaxing evening, which continued late into the night for all in attendance. It afforded people the opportunity to reminisce and catch up as they recalled times gone by while wandering through the classrooms viewing the photos on the display boards and on the Power points, or as they sat out in the beautiful sunshine on what was truly a memorable
occasion for the 40th celebration of Coolderry Central School on Friday May 26th. 2023.

Our 5th and 6th had a great day in Mary Immaculate College at Science Blast, they worked extremely hard on their project " Why do Boats Float ?" The judges were very impressed with all their work had our class had a great day

Offaly Skills Competition
Avah and Conor won through a very competitive school competition to represent our school at the county final in Banagher. They practiced hard and on the day achieved great scores. Conor was very competitive in a strong field, Avah was involved in great drama, she tied third and as a result there had to be a playoff to decide who would take third place and the coveted place of representing Offaly in Croke Park at The All Ireland Semi-final. Avah won the playoff, a super achievement and we are all looking forward to seeing Avah play in Croke Park in July.

40 Years
Our school will be celebrating 40 years this year. On May 26th, we will be having a night of celebration, there will be a photo exhibition and plenty more on the night, more details will follow.

March in 5th and 6th
March proved to be a very busy month for pupils in 5th and 6th. They started the month with a Confirmation retreat in Castletown, their Confirmation followed on March 25th and what a fantastic day the pupils had. They were a credit to themselves and their school.
Also this month Jenny represented the school at the Easons Spelling Bee and was very successful. Add in a victory in their first Cumann na mbunscol hurling match, 5th and 6th then ended the month with a Pajamas Day to celebrate their months work.

Our very busy, Active School committee organised a very successful Green Schools Slogan Competition. Each pupil created their own Active Flag Slogan and designed their own posters. As you can see our committee had a very difficult task picking the winners, we had winners from every class. Well done to everyone who took part.

Walk On Wednesday
Another very successful walk on Wednesday took place in Coolderry Gaa pitch on March 1st. As part of our ACTIVE school efforts we are organising a week every month to get every member of our school community working together.

Cumann na mBunscol

Our Active Flag committee have organised lunchtime Olympic handball games with pupils from 2nd and 3rd. The committee earmarked these classes to work on throughout the month of March. It all started in splendid sunshine and pupils seem to love the new game.

Our 5th and 6th class pupils along with their teacher Mrs. Teehan headed To St. Brendan's School in Birr to take part in the Robotic competition. The class had put in great effort over the last few months and had a very enjoyable day .

At our first meeting of our Active School committee, we elected Jenny as secretary and Sarah as Chairperson and set to work. We decided that every Wednesday, pupils from the older classes would organise games and activities for our pupils in Juniors to First Class. They has been a great success and will be continuing. The committee have lots of ideas going forward. So you can look forward to lunchtime leagues, Funky Fridays, Walk on Wednesdays and much more in the months ahead.

For the first time in 2 years , a green school committee has been formed again in our school. There is representatives from all classes. At their first meeting, they have set a challenge for the whole school to come up with a new Green Schools slogan . They are running a poster competition to find our new slogan. Snow Day
It was a welcome surprise (for the pupils) when they arrived in school to see a blanket of snow. The pupils were eager to get out and enjoy the fun, especially our pupils in the junior playground .

Pupils in 5th and 6th with the help of Dean and Mrs. Teehan built their robot in preparation for their Vex Robotic competition in January. Throughout the week all classes engaged in a variety of science experiments and 5th and 6th put on a science exhibition for the junior pupils. A sincere “Thank You” to the Threshing Festival group and to the wider community for the
fantastic support and commitment which helped to ensure the Threshing Festival was an amazing success on Sunday August 28th,2022.
Each year ,various groups may put forward a proposal to request funding from the
proceeds of the festival. Once it became obvious that the festival could possibly be returning this year, after a two year lapse ,due to Covid-19, Coolderry Central School Principal, Una Teehan, on behalf of the Board of Management and the Parents Association put forward an application requesting to be the main beneficiary
of the Threshing Festival for 2022.The whole school community were thrilled to be given the opportunity to be the main beneficiary of the proceeds.
The support and help offered from the outset ,right throughout the summer was just so refreshing as many people gave willingly of their time to help with the very successful ticket sales , promoting the event, in sourcing sponsorship, organizing various events for the day ,giving a huge commitment of time and expertise in the setting up of the field , coming on board to help in so many ways prior to the event, on the day and indeed after the event.
It was testament to a great community spirit and helped to ensure that the actual day was a truly enjoyable ,memorable event for both young and old.
The attendance on the day was huge and it was evident that so many people thoroughly
enjoyed the chance to relax ,to chat and to catch up with each other after such a long time of not being afforded this opportunity.
We, at Coolderry Central School were thrilled to be so actively involved again this year and wish to express our sincere thanks to the Threshing Committee under the guidance of Ray Dempsey. We also wish to thank and acknowledge the fantastic support of parents,their extended families, former pupils, current pupils, people from the wider community, exhibitors, organisers of various stalls and events and their teams and all those who helped in so many ways .
We really appreciate being the main beneficiary this year of the proceeds for the development of our school for pupils now and into the future.

Girls Football
Hard luck to our girls football team who played in the county final recently. In a very high scoring game, they came up a little short to a very strong Crinkle. A great achievement to reach the final considering none of the girls had ever played football before. Thanks girls for all your efforts over the last couple of months. Well done Crinkle.

European Schools Sports Day
European Sports Day was a tremendous success on Friday September 30th.The day began with a Whole School Walk involving all of the pupils and staff.
This was followed by hurling and camogie for all of the pupils .
Throughout the day pupils engaged in Minor games , Football and Tag Rugby.
Pupils in fifth and sixth class also designed posters to celebrate the day.

Tag Rugby and Hurling coaching
It is great to see all classes benefitting from hurling coaching and 3rd -6th getting the opportunity to try tag rugby. It is a busy sporting time in school. The boys football narrowly lost out in their last group game, therefore didn`t qualify for the final but a very young team put it some excellent performances.

Celebrating Success
We were delighted to celebrate the achievements of Naomh Brid u12 /u14 and Coolderry U 13 hurlers . These teams included former and current pupils. They returned to the school to exhibit the county championship trophies they won recently. They are pictured below with Mrs. Teehan and their camogie coach Imelda.

Girls into the Final
Congratulations to our girls gaelic football team who have qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol final. All these girls are playing gaelic football for the first time, they managed to win all four games against Clonlisk N.S., Clareen N.S., Crinkle N.S. and Shinrone N.S.. This is a great achievement, as this is the first time the school has ever participated in girls football. We also managed to have 24 girls togged out and all got to play their part. The girls will play in the final in two weeks time. Details to follow. Well done girls.

For the first time in 3 years years school tours returned . Pupils were delighted to be heading away on the bus. Over the last few weeks Infants went to the pet farm, 1st and 2nd headed to Lullymore (and Mc Donalds), 3rd and 4th to Castlecomer Discovery Park and 5th and 6th headed to UL. Below 3rd and 4th relaxing and enjoying their ice-creams in the sun.

Fire Brigade.
The whole school got a great opportunity to meet members of Offaly Fire Brigade. All pupils got to see the fire truck in action and the older classes received an interesting talk about fire safety.

Success for our Girls
Our brilliant camogie team, have captured the Cumann na mBunscol camogie title for the first time since 2007. In a tense battle played in difficult conditions our girls defeated a very strong Carrig team 3-1 to 2-0. Thank you to all our supporters on the day and for the welcome back to school. With 17 out of the 21 girls available again next year, the future is bright. Thank you to our 6th class girls Lucy, Shauna, Caoimhe and our great captain Anna for all they have given to our school on the camogie field. They really led from the front.

Next up, Abbie`s former 5th/6th classmates Ajay Cleary and Shane Connolly who were part of Offaly`s minor Leinster championship success. We are so proud of the two boys who now have a new medal to put beside their Cumann na mBunscol medals from 2017. An inspiration to our young hurling and camogie starts coming up through the school.

As part of the preparation for Confirmation on May 21st ,pupils in sixth class spent a day at Castletown Retreat Centre on May 13th. They thoroughly enjoyed the time out. They are pictured at the centre with Mrs. Teehan in the beautiful grounds prior to their return to school.

Shauna put in an excellent performance, Philip came second in the whole county. He will now represent his school and county by getting an opportunity to play in Croke Park at half-time in the All Ireland senior semi- final at the start of the July. A fantastic achievement.

The pupils in fifth and sixth class ,along with Mrs .Teehan recently participated in the E.S.B. Science Blast initiative.The pupils came up with a series of science -based questions and set about finding answers.The study involved a lot of work and a range of experiments by the pupils.
On Thursday ,April 7th ,the pupils were questioned by a scientist nominated by the RDS organising body on their research and findings.They were thrilled to be awarded a plaque for their hard work.
Congratulations to all of them.

Congratulations to Former pupil Molly Hogan who was part of the Offaly minor Camogie team who beat Laois in the All Ireland final held recently. The whole school was delighted when Molly brought in the All Ireland trophy. A great achievement and we are all very proud of you Molly.

Irish Aid Project Awards
Pupils in fifth and sixth class along with Mrs Teehan have been actively engaged in the Irish Aid Awards.

SUPPORT FOR HUMANITARIAN RELIEF IN THE UKRAINE
On March 15th , we held a no uniform day in association with UNICEF to support humanitarian relief in the Ukraine. On the day there was a fantastic response from pupils and their families as a total of €1,065 was raised for this very worthy cause.Thank you so much to everyone for your very generous donations .

For International Women's Day, third and fourth looked at women in sport. The class have been busy preparing for their upcoming Confirmation. They have also been very creative in the classroom.
Goal Jersey Day
On October 8th, we held a jersey day for Goal. Pupils from all classes wore jerseys and we managed to collect 190 Euro for Goal. It brought great colour to our school and gave us an opportunity to reflect on pupils in other countries who aren`t as lucky as us.

Graduation Day at Coolderry Central School.
Wednesday June 23rd was a very special day for all of the pupils in sixth class at Coolderry Central School.
It was the day they formally graduated from the school as they embark on the next phase of their educational journey. The day began with a short reflection and thanks for the many gifts and talents which each of them have.
Each of the pupils were presented with their Graduation certificates by Mrs. Teehan.
The Parents Association organised hoodies as a gift for each of the pupils and a special cake to honour the occasion.
Throughout the day, the pupils engaged in a range of fun activities and had great fun.
Later on , the ice cream van arrived, much to the delight of not only the sixth class pupils but to all of the pupils in the school as cones were enjoyed by both staff and pupils alike!
It was a great day and hopefully one ,which the pupils in the school will remember as a special day on which we all wished the best of luck to the sixth class pupils as they advance to second level after their time at Coolderry Central School.
The very best of luck to all of them.

Science week always proves to be an enjoyable week in our school and this year was no exception. All classes completed various experiments. On Active flag committee have been very busy at lunchtime. Followling suggestions at our recent committee meeting. 3rd - 6th are playing a lunchtime basketball league and 1st and 2nd are playing an Olympic handball league. Big thanks to all our committee for organizing all these events.

Vex Robotic Championship
Huge congratulations to our 5th and 6th class who took part in the VEX robotic competition held recently in Tullamore. Our pupils have been working very hard in recent months to plan and develop their robot. On the day they completed in various games and challenges. They achieved a fantastic 2nd place out of 28 schools. Well done to Mrs Teehan and her class.

French and German Ambassador
Friday the 17th of January was a special day for our school. Our 5th/6th class have been completing a project on the EU. As part of this project the school was very lucky to have the French and German ambassadors Stephane Crouzat and Deike Potzel visit our school. They spoke to pupils in Mrs.Teehans fifth and sixth class on their projects and answered all of their questions. This was followed by a concert in our GP room to showcase our school. A real enjoyable and worthwhile day for everyone involved. We even got a mention on twitter from the French ambassador.

Following on from our no uniform on the day of the Halloween holidays, we got an opportunity to hand over our cheque to Bothar. A representative from Bóthar visited our school and talked to the pupils about the work Bóthar does and where their money will be spent.

Liam Brady : Local Hero, National Champion
We are all so proud to have a national champion as a former pupil . Liam ran a fantastic race to win the National senior cross country championship in Dublin recently. Liam has been excellent in the last few years in giving his time to the school including in September when he raised our Active Flag. Liam is an absolute hero and inspiration to us all.

School Visitors In October
October has proven to be a very busy month. Our local Garda Declan Ganly called to all classes to discuss safety at Halloween. Third and fourth class had a special visit from the local fire brigade to discuss fire safety at home and all classes had a visit from Joe our local librarian who spoke to pupils on the benefits of the library and he read some stories. Thank you to all our visitors.

5th and 6th Class Local History Trip
Our fifth and sixth class pupils along with their teacher Mrs.Teehan visited the Local Cistercian Monastery. They were given a tour of the grounds and buildings. They were given a great insight in to the vast history associated with this historic building. A very informative trip.

It was with great pleasure that our past pupil and international athlete Liam Brady came to unveil our new flag. On the day , all of the pupils in the school from Junior Infants to sixth class were given the opportunity to showcase their creativity.

CRAFTED PROJECT AT COOLDERRY CENTRAL SCHOOL
Junior and Senior Infant pupils under the direction of Mrs. Teehan and in association with the Arts Council undertook the “Crafted “ initiative in March 2019.
This initiative involved the use of willow to create “Noah and the Ark “culminating in the presentation of the project at Laois Education Centre .
Over a number of weeks , the pupils created an ark using willow and also the making of the animals ,the characters,the rainbow using collage and the sea.
The pupils also told the story of the Ark orally and Mrs. Teehan presented a powerpoint highlighting the process involved.
The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the project and acquired a range of skills as a result of participating in the project. Here is a powerpoint we made of the project.

Infants went to Tearaways, 1st and 2nd enjoyed a great walk in the Slieve Bloom mountains, followed by a trip to Roll and Bowl, 3rd and 4th enjoyed a fun day out at the National Stud and 5th/6th had a great day at the University of Limerick.

Robot Wars
Our 5th/6th class under the direction of Mrs.Teehan came fourth in Offaly Robotic finals in Tullamore. The robot they built took part in many activities against robots from other Schools throughout Offaly. Despite only having one month to get ready our class managed to come fourth. A very enjoyable evening was had .

The robot they built took part in many activities against robots from other Schools throughout Offaly. Despite only having one month to get ready our class managed to come fourth. A very enjoyable evening was had .

Ella was in Dublin representing the school at the Leinster Spelling Bee Championships. After winning Offaly in March, Ella went on to represent the county. She came a fantastic 4th place in the Whole of Leinster Well done Ella we are all so proud of your amazing achievement.

Down Syndrome Fundraiser
Well done to everyone who contributed to our recent fundraiser. Over 200 Euro was raised when pupils and staff wore the craziest socks for a day. Great colour and creativity was on display.

We held our bi-annual book fair during the month of November. It gave an opportunity for pupils and their families to browse and purchase books . As a result of the book fair the school has now raised money to buy new books for our school.

This year again we took part in the Christmas shoe box appeal . It was a fantastic opportunity for us to learn about and do our little bit to help other children who may not be as lucky as us.

Infants took part in the Incredible Edible programme which consists eating lots of fruit and veg and growing our own vegetables. They all done amazingly well.

5th and 6th class went to see the musical Jesus Christ Superstar preformed by the pupils of St. Brendan`s Birr. They absolutely loved the show and it was great to see so many past pupils on stage. Third and fourth class headed to see Cólaiste Phobal Roscrea`s production of Beauty and the Beast and the Infants /first and second are heading to Birr theater to see Rudolph. Enjoy

5th and 6th class went to see the musical Jesus Christ Superstar preformed by the pupils of St. Brendan`s Birr. They absolutely loved the show and it was great to see so many past pupils on stage. Third and fourth class headed to see Cólaiste Phobal Roscrea`s production of Beauty and the Beast and the Infants /first and second are heading to Birr theater to see Rudolph. Enjoy

Well done to Lauren and Aoibhe who won prizes in the credit union poster competition and Katie who was one of the people who won the poster competition in St. Brendens Community School Birr with their show "Jesus Christ Superstar".
Ongoing Events
Throughout November, all classes are taking part in athletics coaching and hurling coaching. All classes are busy working on their Christmas concerts so a great nights entertainment will be had in December.
Maths week 2017
The pupils of 5th and 6th as part of maths week took the juniors and seniors on a maths trail and they had great fun learning learning maths in a fun way. Well done 5th and 6th class.
Fire Brigade
The fire brigade visited 3rd and 4th to talk about fire safety. The local guard also came and spoke to all classes about the dangers of Halloween, a big thank you to them.

As part of our fundraiser for Bóthar we had a no uniform day. People dressed up in scary Halloween costumes and other dressed in casual clothes. We raised 155 euros. Even some of the teachers dressed up.

Our fitness day took place on September 29th. It was a fun and active day all classes got involved and walked a mile. Also 5th and 6th got to be teacher for the day. They completed fun activities with the juniors and seniors.

Gaelic Football Team 2017
We have started our Gaelic Football League. We met Lusmagh in our first game 5-6 to 2-3. we lost to Clonlisk on Thursday the 28th of September.Our next match was against Kileen which we won. and we are battling against Carrig to get into the final vs Clonlisk. Check back here for more information.

Hurling and camogie
The hurling team won their first two matches against Kinnity/Roscomroe and Clonlisk and the camogie team drew their first match with Carrig. The camogie team also had a good win against Kilcormac. Wishing best of luck to them in future matches.

School Musicals
On the 15th of November 5th and 6th class pupils went to St. Brendans Community School, Birr to see the musical, Guys and Dolls. On the 23rd 3rd and 4th went to Colaiste Phobal to see their musical, The Wizard Of Oz. Infants, 1st and 2nd class pupils are going to Birr Theatre to see Frosty The Snowman. We would like to thank St. Brendans and Colaiste Phobal for the great opportunity and hope infants, 1st and 2nd enjoy their musical!
Book Fair
Our bi-annual book fair takes place from Thursday 17th of November to the 24th. Their will be an opportunity for children to buy a book to add to their book collection.
Rugby
Classes from first to sixth are taking part in rugby training every week with their coach Stephen. Everyone is starting to get the hang of it and are loving learning new skills.

This year we are hopefully going for three years in a row. We defeated Clonlisk in our first match this year. In our second match we defeated Kileen. we have upcoming games against Rath and Carrig.

Graduation
On Monday the 20th we marked the end of an era with our 10 sixth class children leaving to head to secondary school. These children have filled our lives with smiles and laughter over the last 8 years. We had a lovely graduation ceremony in the school hall, involving a mass, presentation of certificates and new hoodies for the children. A big thank to Fr. Blake, the parents association and Mr. Ryan for organising everything. Best of luck sixth class 2016 and thanks for all the memories.

Sports Day 2016
Sports day was again a huge success. The day started with various races, followed by many activities including penalty shootout, obstacle course and target games. The day concluded with the Junior league final. Well done to both teams who played excellent in the final. Throughout the year the pupils had to do a range of science experiments. In addition they had to cover a range of mathematical areas and incorporate them into the project. Hurling Camogie 2016 After getting off to a slow start with opening day losses. Both teams have picked up important wins against Ballyboy and Clonlisk to set up an interesting couple of weeks. Keep it going everybody !!!! Spring Clean The Green schools committee organised a biodiversity clean up in the school on April 28th. The Green schools will be going on a trip to the to the woods to learn more about biodiversity. Also the Green Schools Committee will be having a biodiversity poster competition very soon. Proclamation Day On March 15th, we held a very successful proclamation day. Everyone gathered in the school yard where the national flag was raised by Mrs. Hynes, a local lady who was born in 1916. This was followed by the reading of the proclamation and the singing of the national anthem. After, everyone returned to the GP room in the school where a concert took place. This involved children singing, playing instruments and dancing. Afterwards the parents had some tea and sandwiches and got an opportunity to explore Seamus Kennedy`s museum of artifacts. Many thanks to everyone who helped to make the day possible especially to Mrs. Hynes and family, Seamus Kennedy, the musicians and the parents association. Confirmation Congratulations to the sixth class children who received their Confirmation on March 12th. It was a beautiful ceremony. Well done to Mr. Ryan and his class. Best of Luck Best wishes to Abbie Walshe going to Glasgow to dance in the World Championships over the Easter break. Fantastic achievement, Enjoy the experience. First Confession Well done to 2nd class children who received their First Confession recently. 1916 On March the 15th in the school at 2 o`clock we will be raising our Irish flag to commemorate 1916 . The children in the school have been working extremely hard in preparation. Fifth and sixth class have drafted a new proclamation which will be unveiled on the day, Third and Fourth class have been studying the leaders and the timeline of the rising. First and second class have studied the the Irish flag while the Infants have learned about a unique event that happened during the rising ( big treat in store ). Come Tuesday, to see the pupils` hard work and for some stories, songs and dancing. Ipad Congratulations to third and fourth class pupils who won an Ipad for their project on the Easter Rising in a competition with Laois Education Centre. Massive well done to everyone. Scriobh Leabhar Congratulations to Sarah, Sean, Meabh,Conor, Lauren, Alison, Dylan and Jean who won prizes recently in the scriobh leabhar competition with Laois Education centre. Engineers Week Children from 3rd to 6th visited Birr library to learn more about engineering week. A great day had by all. Enterprise Day Well done to all children who took part in Enterprise Day. The school was set up so budding enterprisers could display their products for everyone to buy. Huge creativity and innovation went in to the projects. Have a look a the activities section of our website for more pictures and information of the childrens` projects. Paired Reading Paired reading has started between all classes. Children from the younger classes are paired with a child from the older classes who help them develop their reading fluency. It has been working well and it is an important element of our school improvement plan in literacy. Have a look at first and second and fifth and sixth in action. Irish Aid Third and fourth class have been working hard on their Irish Aid projects. Click on their page on the website to see their great work. Operation Transformation Children from first and second class are involved in their own Operation Transformation. They have been completing ten minutes extra exercise every day. This has involved walking, running, aerobics, gymnastics and loads more fun games. Great fun is been had by all. |

Trip to Birr
Children from infants and 1st and 2nd headed to Birr theatre to see the show `` A Hippo For Christmas``. As usual there was great excitement for all children especially our younger pupils on their first school trip.
Local History Projects
On December 3rd Children from 3rd and 4th showcased their local history projects in Laois Education centre. Their hard work was clear to be seen. The judges were very impressed. Well done everybody
We Will Rock You
Children from 5th and 6th went to St. Brenden`s secondary school to see their production. As usual the standard of acting, dancing and singing was superb. Well done St. Brenden`s school and it was great to see some former pupils taking to the stage
Shoebox Appeal
Well done to all children who brought in shoe boxes for children in the third world. A great effort by all.

On the day of our Halloween holidays, we had a no uniform day in aid of Syria. Many children dressed up in fantastic Halloween costumes (including some scary looking teachers).
